Courtney Guy

Courtney is from High Point, NC and has been interested in interior design from a young age. At Winthrop, she has been an active leader in her sorority, Delta Zeta, as well as the Interior Design Organization. She believes that while design is an aesthetic art, it should also be practical and solve problems. Her goal in design is to make users happy and help them live better lives. Following her graduation, Courtney hopes to obtain a career in commercial design or sales in the Charlotte area.

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

Adventure Outfitters

This project is a corporate office for an online clothing and home goods retailer. The design inspiration derived from the active, outdoor lifestyle brand. Extensive programming was conducted in order to move the company from a larger, less functional, office to a new building. By selecting new typical workstations and adjusting public space allocations, the company was able to save about 12,000 square feet, which will decrease the cost of rent. In addition, collaborative spaces were added to increase employee collaboration and boost the friendly corporate culture.

High Cotton Southern Bistro

High Cotton Southern Bistro received its name from the old southern phrase “being in high cotton.” This means that if a man’s crop is very high or plentiful, then he will make a lot of money. Therefore, this bistro will be a fine dining experience reflecting southern cuisine, family values, and traditional roots. The design will be a combination of rustic and sophisticated elements. A full service bar and restaurant will be open in the evenings while an adjacent quick service restaurant and grocery will provide premade and made-to-order lunch specials during the day.

NEXT Learning Facility

This project is inspired by a quote from Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” The NEXT Learning Facility will be a place for modern learning at the university level. Classrooms and study spaces will be flexible and provide options for a variety of learning techniques including lectures, group work, and individual studying. Vibrant pops of color and graphic signage will add excitement and a bright look to the interior. Users will have a choice of Steelcase seating options that will allow them to be comfortable enough to stay for hours or just pop in for a quick group meeting. Overall, the facility will be a place for users to learn, collaborate, and grow.

The Tailor Hotel Lobby

The Tailor is an upscale, high service, hotel for the active businessman visiting Charlotte, NC. The concept behind the lobby has been inspired by the motto, “Work hard, live hard.” Therefore, the lobby will contain functional workspace as well as a full service bar and lounge. This lounge will provide comfortable social spaces for guests to entertain clients or visitors. Other features of the lobby will include a self-service mini grocery for those on a tight schedule. An interactive touch screen board will update guests on local events, restaurants, and other amenities. The aesthetics will be contemporary and masculine, aiming to attract those with a heightened sense of style. Overall, the hotel and staff will “tailor” to guests that are accustomed to being treated well, work hard for it, and expect the same of their hotel.
